The Future of Sheet Labels: Print, Templates, and What's Next
Every few years, someone asks me whether sheet labels will get pushed aside by roll-fed presses and fleets of digital finishing lines. My answer is usually the same: not anytime soon. Sheet labels are too embedded in small-run production, office workflows, and short-notice packaging for that to happen.
I've spent the last decade running label production in a mid-size shop, and I've seen the demand curve bend in a direction I didn't expect. The work isn't shifting away from cut-sheet formats. It's shifting toward more flexible versions of the same idea.
By 2025, the question is no longer whether sheet-fed label jobs belong in a commercial print environment. It's how many different label geometries can sit on one sheet without slowing down the workflow.
A Production View of What's Changing
I get asked about the death of the label sheet every time a new digital inkjet press hits the market. But in our shop, the opposite is happening. The number of jobs that start with a PDF of circles or rectangles on an 8.5 x 11 sheet has grown roughly 30% over the last three years. Most of those jobs would have taken weeks on a flexo line. Now they're done in a day.
From a production manager's seat, the real change is simpler: sheet labels now fit into the same workflow as high-volume roll stock. The common thread is not the shape or the material. It's the need for a fast, predictable way to turn a handful of design files into physical labels. Direct thermal labels have become a steady part of our sheet-fed business because businesses need internal shipping labels almost as often as they need polished product labels. With the right adhesive and face stock, both can be printed on the same substrate. We don't push customers to consolidate everything. But when it makes sense, it saves them a whole setup.
Mailing Labels Are Getting Smarter, Not Just Faster

But for now, the practical change is that a one-person company and a 500-employee manufacturer can use the same label sheets, the same templates, and the same digital front end. That's a bigger deal than it sounds.
