1877

The Beginning

Albert Greif founded the company in Cleveland, Ohio, manufacturing wooden barrels and kegs for local breweries and food processors. Initial production: 50 barrels per week.

1912

Steel Revolution

Introduced first steel drums to replace wooden barrels for chemical storage, revolutionizing hazardous material packaging. Patented innovative sealing technology that became industry standard.

1945

Post-War Expansion

Expanded to 12 manufacturing facilities across the United States. Began supplying packaging to major oil and chemical companies supporting post-war industrial growth.

1972

Public Company

Greif Bros. Corporation went public on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: GEF). This milestone enabled accelerated investment in R&D and global expansion.

1988

Global Footprint

Entered European market through strategic acquisitions in Germany and France. Established manufacturing presence in Asia-Pacific with facilities in Singapore and Australia.

Containerboard Entry
