Tape Gorilla, Glue Bottles, and Flyer Images: What a Packaging Inspector Won't Tell You

Search 'tape gorilla' and you'll find a big silver roll with a gorilla on the label. I'm not here to talk about that brand, though. I'm the quality manager at a packaging and printing company called Gorilla—yes, the names get confusing. My job is to review custom boxes, labels, stickers, posters, flyers, business cards, tape, and sealants before they ship. The frustrating part isn't the defects themselves. It's that most of these problems were preventable. And no, the problem wasn't always the printer.

The Surface Problem: It Looked Fine in the Mockup

A customer calls and says the tape won't stick. Another sends a photo of a label peeling off a water bottle. Another asks why their flyer looks blurry when the image looked crisp on screen. They all want the same thing: a better supplier, a stronger adhesive, a different vendor.

I understand that reaction. It's tempting to think you just need a better supplier. But after four years of inspecting orders, I can tell you that most failures come from something more boring: specs that weren't complete, materials that didn't match the environment, and images that were never going to print well.

What's Actually Going On: Specs, Not Suppliers

Here's the thing I wish every buyer understood: a package fails when the spec is wrong, not when the printer is careless. Let me give you three examples.

Tape and Adhesives

What Actually Helps (And What I'd Do Differently)

The fix isn't complicated, but it does take discipline.

  • Write specs like an engineer, not a marketer. Don't just say 'tape that sticks.' Say what substrate, what temperature range, what humidity, what shipping distance. The more constraints you give, the better the advice you'll get.
  • Request a physical proof before the full run. Screens lie. Paper doesn't. Check the proof against your Pantone swatch, your label stock, and your own eyes.
  • Test in the environment where the package will actually live. Put the label on the Lilo bottle, put it in a wet lunch box, and check it after a week. That test costs $20 and saves a $5,000 reprint.
  • Use a supplier who will say no. At Gorilla, there are jobs we don't take because the spec is impossible. A partner who tells you 'this will fail' is worth more than one who just says yes.

This sounds kinda obvious, I know. But the obvious stuff is usually the first thing to get cut when a deadline hits.

The Honest Bottom Line

There is no 'best' tape, no 'best' glue, no 'best' printer. There's only what works for your specific project. If your packaging is failing, don't start by switching vendors. Start by asking what spec you actually gave them.

That's been my experience after hundreds of orders. Maybe your situation is different—this is not a one-size-fits-all rule. But if you're dealing with peeling labels, sticky messes, or blurry flyers, the problem is almost never a malicious printer. It's a missing spec.
