An "estimated" 5-day turnaround with no recourse is different from a guaranteed 5-day turnaround. Some suppliers build in buffers; others cut it razor-thin. I learned this the hard way. We had a just-in-time production run waiting on specialty IBCs. The delivery was "estimated" for Monday. It came Wednesday. That delay cost us about $22,000 in line downtime and expedited freight to catch up.

Now, I always ask: "Is that a guaranteed date? What's your on-time percentage for this product line? What's the remedy if it's late?" The answer tells you more about their operational reliability than any sales pitch. The value isn't the speed—it's the certainty.

6. Is getting three quotes still the golden rule?

The "always get three quotes" advice ignores the transaction cost. Evaluating a new industrial packaging vendor isn't like comparing prices on distilled water bottles. It takes time: reviewing their certifications, auditing their quality docs, maybe even visiting their facility.

For a one-off, small order? Sure, get quotes. For a strategic, recurring purchase like our main drum supply? The relationship and proven performance have immense value. I'd rather pay 5% more to a vendor who has never failed a delivery or caused a quality incident than save that 5% with an unknown entity. The risk isn't worth the savings.
